Business Affairs
Business Affairs are responsible for the negotiation of all legal and commercial aspects of signing an artist to EMI. In most instances the company will be committing to spending significant sums on signing, recording and marketing an album by a new artist, consequently we must ensure that we obtain all necessary rights and retain an exclusive interest in the band's/artist's music. Business Affairs negotiates and agrees all the deal points e.g. advances, royalties etc and then draws up the contracts to reflect in detail the exact terms of the agreement with the artists. Business Affairs also deals with the negotiation and documentation of all on-going issues following signing including producer and re-mixer agreements, tour support, promo videos, options and secondary exploitation of the repertoire. The department's responsibility also involves acting to protect the company's copyright recording against piracy and bootlegging.
