Album Cover Design

What process is used to develop a suitable cover?
Every record company uses a variety of designers for CD booklets, chosen either by the artist, by the marketing manager or a combination of the two. In the case of almost all new recordings, the artists themselves are actively involved, and in many cases it is they who will come up with definite concept ideas. These initial concepts are then placed with a designer; who can either be part of an in-house art department or from an outside design company.
On occasions, a designer will be given an open brief - i.e they will be played the album and shown photographs of the artist and then come up with one or more concepts for consideration.
On other occasions, as is often the case with established artists, it is the artist who will bring finished artwork to the company, having worked with their own designer to create a concept that best reflects themselves and their music. |

What factors would you take into account when considering your target audience?
This question is most importantly considered when dealing with TV advertised concept albums. These are individually researched prior to committing to the campaign, and an essential part of the research is reaction to a selection of sleeve ideas, title, even choice of colour, to ensure maximum acceptance. In the case of new recordings discussed in question 1, the target audience will be considered in a less structured way. |
