What do we do?
EMI Records is the UK and Irish operating company for EMI Music, the recorded music side of the business. EMI Records has many achievements to boast about … in 1997 we celebrated our centenary year. As well as being a leading force in breaking new acts, our back catalogue has grown to one of the most extensive within the industry. Since 1897 EMI has produced the very best in music, ranging from pop, rock and classical, to jazz, rap and dance.

What's it like to work at EMI Records?
EMI is an exciting and dynamic company to work for. Everyone here has an appreciation for music, whatever their personal taste may be. The office environment is informal, as is the dress code - basically anything goes! Overall, the company culture is fast-paced and ambitious. Employees in the support functions must be comfortable working within a creative / artistic environment and have a 'hands on' approach. The decisions taken here are business driven and there is certainly a work- hard ethos. We expect our employees to be professional and focused, whatever their role.

What kind of qualifications do I need to work for EMI?
Well that depends on which area of the business you're applying to work in. If it's A&R then formal qualifications rarely make a difference. There it's all about the knowledge of music, having a good 'ear' and many contacts. Similar goes for promotions where a cool head and the ability to get on well with everyone is a must. However for press an associated degree is useful and for marketing a professional qualification is fast becoming the norm. Roles within the support functions generally follow what is normally expected regardless of industry.

How can I start my career in a record company?
If you're looking for your very first serious job and you want to find a way into the company, then it's really a case for starting at the bottom and working your way up. Base skills and traits such as, good communication, commitment, flexibility and being a fast learner will all help. If you've got any professional qualifications then that'll help too. Of course a must is a passion for music and enough energy to keep persevering until you land that job!

What kind of interview process can I expect?
As we're very friendly people it's not too frightening! There's always a formal interview which is either with someone from Human Resources or the line manager, or sometimes both together. Depending on the job there might also be a questionnaire or test and if it's a senior position that's being applied for then a group exercise and/or presentation will be asked for too.
