LAURA
Which department did you work in at EMI?
I worked in the Artist Relations department.

What did your role entail?
My role varied on a daily basis. It ranged from handling ticket orders, to venue scouting, to backstage logistics as well as working on events happening with artists, employees and company executives.

What was EMI like to work for?
Working at EMI was a great and memorable experience. Everyone was so friendly and keen on helping me learn the ins and outs of working at a record label. The work environment is highly creative, and everyone works extremely hard. It's a working environment filled with passionate music lovers. I was able to meet so many people throughout the company as all departments work together to accomplish common goals.

Did your role give you a good overview of how a record company works?
My role required me to interact with other departments, which in turn taught me about the company. Working at EMI was a great place to learn about how the record company functions and works. Everyone at EMI was so willing to make sure I got the most out of my placement.

Did you learn a lot about the music industry and the issues it faces, i.e. the digital evolution?
The digital evolution is an ever-preset opportunity and concern within the music industry. At EMI everyone is constantly thinking how to better utilize this tool to get music to music lovers all over the UK and the world. It was amazing to attend meetings where people would talk about challenges and success with artists. Issues range from how to market a new artist to, which interviews an artist should do if only in town for a few hours. Every situation is different and therefore needs to have a strategic plan.

Has your work experience placement helped you gain a better idea of what you would like to do for a future job?
My placement has given me the opportunity and the confidence to pursue a job within the music/ entertainment industry. I have learned so much from everyone I worked with. They have taken the time to educate and delegate projects and work that have given me valuable tools to get a job in the industry.

CHI

Which department did you work in at EMI?
I worked in the New Media department.

What did your role entail?
I got to write copy, features and reviews as well as interview artists, record podcasts (EMI's first i'll have you know) and edit EPK's for Patrick Duff and Deep Dish.

What was EMI like to work for? for example: Did you meet a lot of people over a cross section of the company?
I fitted right into the department as all members of the team were helpful, as well as easy to get along with. The departments work ethos and atmosphere made it easy and enjoyable to get on with the work.
I met a few other people in the company that seemed pretty cool but mainly the New Media department was where I was able to crack poor jokes and cry at any mistakes I thought I may get rebuked for.

Did your role give you a good overview of how a record company works?
Although I had good knowledge of the industry beforehand, the experience broadened the horizons and gave that little bit more detail into the intricate workings of the record behemoth that is EMI.

Did you learn a lot about the music industry and the issues it faces, i.e.
the digital evolution?

In terms of the ever growing digital market, the work placement was invaluable in learning a lot more about it e.g. mobile marketing, ringtones etc.

Has your work experience placement helped you gain a better idea of what you would like to do for a future job?
I've always wanted to be involved in music and a place in the department would be ideal as Digital Media will eventually become the forefront of many record labels.

ALEX

Which department did you work in at EMI?
The Creative department. I was working with both video commissioners from EMI Records. They decide which production companies to use with each respective band. This was particularly interesting because they co-ordinate everything to do with the video shoots, from what the artist wants to what the director wants.

What did your role entail?
My role included everything from doing photocopying to sitting in on the numerous video shoots, one of which was Corinne Bailey Rae's 'Like A Star.'

What was EMI like to work for?
EMI is a great company to work for, it takes care of its employees impeccably, and the staff themselves are both incredibly friendly and indeed very professional. The environment at EMI is unique in that everyone is very relaxed whilst at the same time the atmosphere is completely buzzing the whole time. Everyone was hugely helpful and as you might expect, passionate about the music and their artists.

Did your role give you a good overview of how a record company works?
Absolutely. Whilst working in the Creative department I was in direct contact with each artist's product manager and marketing representative as well as meeting lots of different people from different departments giving me a unique perspective of how the record label works and conducts business.

Did you learn a lot about the music industry and the issues it faces, i.e. the digital evolution?
I did learn a huge amount about the issues which are at the forefront of the music industry including what exactly EMI is doing as a group to tackle the decline in CD sales and growth of online music which was very interesting.

Has your work experience placement helped you gain a better idea of what you would like to do for a future job?
I have been fortunate that whilst working in the Creative department, I was in contact with certain aspects of marketing which I found particularly interesting. I love the idea of being in charge of marketing a band or an artist and for me to have the job of helping to market an artist was extremely compelling and certainly something I would like to get involved with in the future and certainly with a company as great to work for as EMI.


DUANE

How did you come to do an internship at EMI?
I was very keen to work in the music industry in some capacity and felt that the best way of going about doing it was to try and get a taste of different roles in different areas. I had previously worked for a small indie label, in music retail and on live events of varying sizes (from club nights to Glastonbury!) and the next step in my mind was to experience life at a major label. Fortunately when I was looking there happened to be an entry level vacancy as an intern for a year, which suited my circumstances perfectly.

Which department do you work in?
I work in the sales department, though I help out when I can with the new media team. Contrary to how it sounds I do not have to get people to buy more records, but I do provide support for those who do.

What does your role entail?
Within sales I am responsible for compiling reports, distributing promotional material, co-ordinating cooperative advertising with retailers across all media (including TV, press and radio) and just generally providing support for the account managers of major suppliers and the reps who deal with all of the indie stores for all of EMI's labels. Within digital media I help out by creating intranet and internet pages and sites, helping to generate content for websites and a variety of other things. While the core of my job is constant, each day provides some variety also.

What is EMI like to work for?
EMI is fantastic to work for, but did take me a while to adjust to. For a start, the dress code is extremely relaxed and the hierarchy of the company is not immediately obvious ' everyone is more or less treated the same and everyone is regarded as being valuable. Everyone is down to earth and approachable - to the point that everyone else on the same training scheme as me had lunch with the CEO of the company! I guess like any job it has it's mundane aspects, but the perks and benefits more than compensate for this.

Does your role give you a good overview of how a record company works?
Of course there is a great mythology of how record companies work, and there is no guarantee that they all work in the same way. However, I imagine that this provides a great insight into how the majors work, though each one will doubtlessly have its own unique ways of doing certain things. The process of getting a CD from the studio to the shops and providing a strong marketing campaign for it is the same regardless of label size, but it is interesting to see how this happens on such a larger and more frequent scale.

Do you learn a lot about the music industry and the issues it faces, i.e. the digital evolution?
I am fortunate enough to be in a role that allows me to be aware of some of the issues and developments that the music industry is currently embroiled in ' i.e. the digital sales team are all located in my department and they are responsible for promoting and selling music online and through mobile phones ' and through my work with the digital media department I have been involved in the promotion of podcasts, which are set to continue to rise in popularity. I'm sure there are a lot of issues that I am not aware of, but I think that the key elements are covered well.

Has your placement helped you gain a better idea of what you would like to do for a future job?
I have been in a position that covers all of the labels of EMI, but involvement is always at the final stage and is often minimal. I think that the next step in my learning and interest would be to become more involved in a fewer amount of projects, which would be satisfied by working with a label, as opposed to a shared service between all of the labels. However, in terms of 'has this given me an idea of where I want to be in 10 years time?' then the answer is no ' there's still so much to learn and experience. Hopefully this is just the start.
