Business Controls Co-Ordinator

My illustrious career at EMI began at the start of 1992 when the new distribution centre opened in Leamington Spa. Before joining EMI I had worked as an administrator in a company that designed cars and previous to this I worked in the export department of a book distributor.

My first job at EMI Distribution was in Customer Services, the department was split into three areas Order Desk, Returns and Special Orders. To begin with the main tasks were taking orders over the phone from dealers, selling albums in each month and dealing with dealer inquiries which could be anything from details on releases through to a late or lost delivery. Eventually I moved on to looking after our export ordering and invoicing and the call-off of our weekly new releases.

In 1996 the company wanted to put in a new Warehouse Management System which had the capacity to ship more units than the previous one. It was decided that this system would be thoroughly tested before it was made live, so a user test team was set up for which I volunteered. In basic terms the WMS system runs everything in the warehouse from the booking in of stock to the fulfilment and dispatching of each order. The job of the user test team was to spend a year testing all these areas on the new system to make sure that when it went live the transition would hopefully be seamless to our customers. We worked very long hours to make sure the system went in on time and although it was hard work it was one of the most enjoyable times I have had within the company.

After my year testing I was asked if I would consider going into Business Controls which was to be moved up to Leamington from Brook Green. The main responsibilities of the department are to update Eros with all our label copy, dealer details and trading terms. After a year it was decided to move the department back down to Brook Green and I was asked if I would like to relocate and I thought I would like to give it a go. The company were a great support during my relocation and I have been based in London for the past two and a half years. Like most of the people I work with I chose to work in this industry because of a love of music so it is great to be able to go to gigs etc the main drawback is having to work with a hangover.
